Since 1 January 2021 the United Kingdom has left the European Union and has therefore become a "third country". Since that date, the UK and the EU have started to function independently of each other. However, the Northern Ireland Protocol gives a special status to Ulster. As a result, different obligations apply in Great Britain (GB: England, Scotland and Wales) and in Northern Ireland. European Regulations (REACH EU, BPR, CLP, etc.) remain applicable in Northern Ireland.
On the other hand, specific regulations for Great Britain have been newly introduced in the UK:
• The REACH regulation (known as UK REACH),
• The Biocidal Products Regulation (GB BPR),
• The Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation (GB CLP)
• Etc.
Companies placing substances, mixtures or articles on the EU and UK markets must now ensure that they meet the requirements of both EU and UK laws. It is therefore essential for them to identify the chemicals manufactured, sold or used and their responsibilities for these products in relation to the relevant market.
To ensure continued access to the UK market companies will need to control their supply chain and ensure that their suppliers are also ready/compliant.
